After days of theories, speculation, and community research, it’s official – Destiny 2 Developer Bungie has confirmed that “an issue has been discovered in our code” that has been affecting the drop rates of certain weapon perk combinations. Bungie says it’s now “working quickly” to fix the unusual bug. While it only took a few days for the issue to go from fan theory to confirmed major technical issue, the bug may have been plaguing the space shooter for quite some time.
About 24 hours ago, at the time of writing, Bungie tentatively acknowledged that there may be issues with weapon perk drop rates after a large amount of community data was sent in, seemingly proving that not all perk combinations have the same RNG weight. Having a grinding event so that you can chase god-level perks for a given weapon is one of the core pillars of looter shooters like Destiny 2 — and the idea that there’s a major problem with the system is underwhelming, to say the least. Unsettling.
Now, Bungie has officially confirmed that it has discovered a deep-rooted “RNG welfare pool issue” in FPS games.
“After investigation, we can confirm that we have discovered an issue in our code where the perk per legendary weapon set is making it difficult to obtain some random perk perk,” it said in a note on the Destiny 2 Team X account said the statement. “In some cases, the ideal perk package is also more accessible. While we checked the content and confirmed that each perk was equally weighted, issues within the RNG perk pool were the culprit.
“Our team quickly identified a potential solution to this issue and are working quickly to validate the fix. Our goal is to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and will share planned patch dates as they become available.”
In a separate post, Bungie said that while it would “love” to learn more about what’s causing the issue in more detail, it’s focused on rolling out the patch as quickly as possible. “Afterwards, we will sit down with the team and discuss all the details,” it promised.
There have been many cases over the years where it’s just too hard to get a great benefits package. Of course, there’s always the danger with anything RNG-based that you might be waiting a while to get what you want to give up, but there are some very common cases where a lot of people in the community have experienced the same thing. Bungie has always denied there was an issue, but there was no malice or deception – it was just as surprised as the community by the RNG discovery of the bug. However, now we finally have some conclusions about what happened.
Destiny 2 has had some pretty crazy and far-reaching bugs in its time, but few as egregious as this one. I’m very interested to hear Bungie’s full explanation – it’s been commendable for its transparency in handling this situation so far, and I hope this continues.
If you’re currently chasing some elusive scrolls in the new Destiny 2 Vesper’s loot dungeon, you might as well stop and wait a few days for this patch to appear. Here are some other great co-op games you can try in the meantime.
